Big Brother 2001, also known as Big Brother 1, was the first season of the Australian reality television series Big Brother. It is based upon the Dutch series of the same name, it premiered on Network Ten on April 23, 2001 and lasted twelve weeks until the live finale on July 16, 2001. Big Brother 1 proved to be an early ratings success. In total, the season averaged 1.4 million viewers, thus making it the fourth highest rated season to date. This season aired for a total of 85 days, with evictions occurring once every week beginning with the second week. In total, fourteen Housemates competed in Big Brother 1. The original twelve entered on the first night, with two intruders entering at a later date. Ultimately, Housemate Ben Williams was later announced as the winner of the series, with Blair McDonough becoming the Runner-Up.
The premise of the show remained largely unchanged from other installments of the series. Big Brother revolves around ten strangers living in a house together with no communication with the outside world. They are filmed constantly during their time in the house, and can have no communication with those filming them. Each week, each contestant, referred to as 'Housemates', choose two people to be up for nomination. The three (or more) people with the most votes will be nominated to leave the house. The viewers then decide which of the nominees should leave, with the selected person leaving during a live show. This process continued until only three Housemates remained, in which the viewers would decide which of the Housemates would win the grand prize. A Housemate can be ejected from the show for breaking rules, such as discussing nominations when not permitted.
The Finale was watched by 2.789 million Australian viewers.[1]

Production[edit]
Broadcast[edit]
Shortly before the premiere of the season, a special entitled Big Brother Revealed aired, featuring information on the casting process and the development of the house.[2] The series held a live launch on April 23, 2001.[3] The contestants were recorded 24 hours a day[4] with cameras fixed around the house, and had to wear portable microphones. Each night, Network Ten broadcast a daily highlights show, and from the second week there was a live eviction show hosted by Gretel Killeen, where the evicted Housemate was interviewed. The nominations aired during the daily highlights show during this season, making it the only season to not feature a live nominations special. This season also aired alongside the Big Brother Saturday spin-off series. This was an hour-long special that aired on Saturday evenings, with Gretel Killeen presenting an overview of press discussions of the series that week. The series also featured interviews with fans, which were conducted by reporter Sami Lukis. News about the previously evicted Housemates was also featured on this special. Big Brother Saturday was not featured in any subsequent seasons. The season concluded on July 16, 2001, lasting for a total of 85 days. This ties Big Brother 1 and Big Brother 8 as being the shortest edition of the series to until Big Brother 11.
Prizes[edit]
The fourteen Housemates in the game were competing for the grand prize of $250,000. Each week, the Housemates attempted to complete various tasks assigned by Big Brother in exchange for a weekly budget, which they used to buy food and luxuries; this included buying things such as alcohol. Big Brother 1, unlike other editions of the series, did not feature luxury competitions or prizes throughout the series.
House[edit]
The House used for Big Brother 1 was located inside of Dreamworld.[5] The House featured a total of 25 cameras and 32 microphones in the various rooms and backyard. The house for the first series was very basic, as part of the theme of the series. The House featured a living room, which had a fireplace for the Housemates to use, and a kitchen, which featured a stove and sink, along with the fridge. There was a large dining table in the kitchen, with room for all of the Housemates. Various two way mirrors are in the house, with a camera crew behind him. The House also featured two bedrooms, with each bedroom featuring six beds. The first bedroom had a double bed and featured blue walls and orange sheets. The bathroom featured blue tile flooring and a clear shower. Housemates could communicate with producers in the room known was the 'Diary Room'. The Diary Room in this season featured yellow walls and an orange chair, and had a simplistic design. This was where nominations took place, and where Housemates could reveal their thoughts. Housemates could be seen by a medical professional in the Diary Room if necessary. Furniture and homewares in the house were provided by Freedom Furniture. The outside of the House featured a chicken coop with various chickens inside, from which the Housemates collect eggs. The Housemates were also given a swimming pool in the backyard to use. There was also a garden in the backyard, which featured a vegetable patch which the Housemates could use.
Format[edit]
The format used for Big Brother in Australia remained largely unchanged from that featured in other editions of the series, though some differences were incorporated. Big Brother is a game show in which a group of contestants, called Housemates, live in isolation from the outside world in a custom built 'house', which includes everyday facilities such as a fully equipped kitchen, garden, two bedrooms, and a bathroom. The house is also a television studio with cameras and microphones in most of the rooms to record the activities of the Housemates. The only place where Housemates can escape the company of the other contestants is the Diary Room, where they are encouraged to voice their true feelings. Not all Diary Room footage is broadcast due to the privacy of the contestants. Each week all Housemates nominate two of their fellow contestants for potential eviction. They award two points to one Housemate, and one point to another. Failure to do so may result in a punishment, such as a reduction in the prize fund. The three, or more, Housemates with the highest number of nominations face a public vote conducted by phone, with the contestant receiving the most votes being evicted from the house. The last contestant remaining in the house is declared the winner and is awarded a cash prize of $250,000. On eviction night, host Gretel Killeen would inform the nominees which of them had been evicted from the house. Following the announcement, the evicted Housemate had to gather their belongings and exit the house. Upon exiting through the house's front door, Killeen led the evictee into a studio where they met with their family and friends. While in the studio, Killeen had an interview with the evicted Housemate, and showed their best bits - a video compilation of their time in the house.
Over the duration of the series, the Housemates were given a series of tasks by Big Brother which tested them in many ways. They were also put to the test by their own ideals, prejudices and opinions against other people from different walks of life; something that has survived from the original 'social experiment' of Big Brother 1. They lived in the communal House and shared cooking and cleaning chores amongst themselves. Housemates were forbidden to sleep during daylight hours (unless unwell) - Big Brother plays the wake-up call persistently in the morning if Housemates do not wake up and will play an alarm clock noise into the house if a Housemate falls asleep during the day. Housemates must also live by the fundamental rules of Big Brother; if the rules are broken it can result in formal warnings, various punishments or even a Housemate's removal from the game. They must wash their own clothes by hand, and they have to make their own bread from scratch. Each week Big Brother sets the Housemates a task in order to determine the shopping budget for the following week. They must work together to win the tasks in order to win a luxury shopping budget which changed based on the number of people remaining in the house. If all food runs out in the House, Big Brother provides emergency rations of chickpeas and rice. Housemates were responsible for their own shopping and decide which items the budget will allow them to have. Only a small percentage of the overall budget can be spent on alcohol.
Big Brother 1 featured some twists to the format throughout the course of the season. On Day 36, Housemates Anita and Rachel entered the house as intruders. Though they were official Housemates, they learned that they were automatically nominated for eviction. Their fellow Housemates then decided which of the two should be evicted from the house, and the Housemate with the most votes was then evicted. The survivor of the eviction was then given immunity from the following round of nominations. Yet another twist in the format occurred on Day 84, only a day before the season finale, when the Housemate who had come in third place was evicted from the house. The finale occurred on the final day, with only two of the three finalists remaining in the house.

Benjamin 'Ben' Zabel, aged 30, entered the Safe House on Day 0 and was the fourth to enter on Launch Night. He was known for idolising Bert and Patti Newton. Ben was nominated for eviction on Day 16 after receiving 11 nomination points, and as a result, he had to move directly to the Halfway House. He survived this eviction on Day 22 after receiving 27% of the vote to save. Ben was up for eviction the following week. He was saved from eviction with 31% of the vote. In week 6 Ben was up for eviction due to the nominations swap. He was saved again with 24% of the Australian vote. On Day 50 Ben was 'Fake' evicted, and was removed to the presidential suite, where he spent 24 hours without the other housemates knowing he was still in the house. After his 24 hours Ben returned to the house. As a birthday present, Bert and Patti Newton entered the house to spend an afternoon with Ben.[1] On Day 73 Ben was the eleventh housemate to be evicted, shocking both the house and Australia. He received the most amount of applause from the eviction show crowd of all housemates evicted to date, as noted by Sonia Kruger; he was considered a frontrunner (along with Tim and Tahan) to win the show. He received 16.2% of the vote. On day 90 Ben returned into the house as Santa's elf to supervise Drew and Boog in Santa's workshop, which was a part of the weekly task. Ben then left the house.
Boog[edit]
Alex 'Boog' Roe, aged 23, entered the Big Brother House on Day 64 as the first female intruder. On Day 70 Boog was saved in the intruder eviction after receiving 55% of the votes to stay while Madaline was evicted however Nathan traded his spot for Madaline which meant that Madaline would stay and Nathan would leave the house. On day 74 Boog was nominated along with Tahan and Mikkayla and survived the eviction on Day 80 which shocked the house. She received 26.7% of the vote. Only 1.7% separated her from Mikkayla who was evicted. Boog was nominated in the following week along with Jade and Madaline. She was saved from eviction with 37% of the votes to save. Caleb[edit]
Caleb Geppert, aged 33, entered the Halfway House on Day 0 and was the last housemate to enter on Launch Night. The same day, Caleb decided to cross halfway through the divide. As a result, he had to return half of his clothes to Big Brother where they were kept until Day 3. On Day 5, Caleb was chosen by Matthew to spend the night in the Presidential Suite with him after Matthew won the first Showdown. On Day 9, Caleb moved into the Safe House after he survived the first round of nominations. On Day 36 Caleb received the fewest votes to save him and was the fifth housemate to be evicted, placing 16th.
Drew[edit]
Anthony 'Drew' Drew, aged 24, entered the Safe House on Day 1 with Jade. As part of the big twist, the two had to pretend to be a married couple to keep their place in the house. As they failed this secret task, both Drew and Jade were automatically nominated for eviction that week[2]. This resulted in Drew moving to the Halfway House on Day 9. On Day 15, Drew was saved from eviction after receiving 38% of the vote to save, as this was more than the percentage received by any other housemate. Drew moved back into the Safe House after surviving nominations on Day 16 having received 0 nomination points. Drew was up again in Week 6 however he survived the eviction with 16% of the vote. He was up in week 9 and avoided eviction again with 17.1% of the vote. In week 10 Drew was nominated for eviction along with Ben, Ed, Tahan and Tim. Drew escaped eviction with 17.0% of the vote. On day 88 Drew was nominated for eviction along with Jade, Ed and Tim. On day 94 Drew was saved from eviction while Ed was evicted. Drew was evicted on Day 99, as part of the Double Eviction that determined the Final 3 housemates. He received 14.1% of the votes to win. Overall, Drew placed in 4th position for Big Brother 2013.
During Big Brother Drew gained a relationship with Tully, they were the most talked about couple of 2013 and they had a nickname Drully.[3] When Tully got evicted her girlfriend didn't appreciate her intimate relationship with Drew. in the final weeks of Big Brother the housemates participated in a freeze task, in the freeze task Tully came in and went over to Drew and whispered ' I'm single ' then made out with him. When Drew got evicted Drully reunited on stage while talking to Sonia Kruger.[4]
Ed[edit]
Ed Lower, aged 26, entered the Safe House on Day 0 and was the eighth housemate to enter on Launch night. On Day 12, Ed won the second Showdown and therefore won $5,000, the nomination superpower and a night in the Presidential Suite with a housemate of his choice. He chose Sharon. In week 5 Ed was nominated and narrowly survived eviction with 7.3% of the public vote. Only 0.1% separated him from Caleb who was evicted. Ed was nominated for eviction in Week 7 and received 16.6% of the vote while Matt was evicted. Ed was automatically put up for nomination in week 9 and survived the eviction with 14.4% (second lowest along with Mikkayla). Ed was again nominated in week 10 along with Ben, Drew, Tahan and Tim and survived the eviction with 16.9%. Only 0.7% separated him from Ben who was evicted. He also had a date with Jade but had to follow Surly's instruction, which Jade was surprised. On day 88 Ed was nominated for eviction along with Tim, Jade and Drew. Ed was evicted on Day 94 after receiving 18.6% of the Australian vote.
Heidi[edit]
Heidi Anderson, aged 29, currently works for radio[5], entered the Safe House on Day 0 and was the tenth housemate to enter on Launch night. During a twist on Day 10, Tahan chose to swap nominated housemate Mikkayla with Heidi, this meant that Heidi would face the first eviction in Mikkayla's place. Heidi was saved from eviction on Day 15 receiving 9% of the vote to save. She returned to the Safe House on Day 16 after surviving nominations, this time receiving 0 nomination points. She was later the sixth housemate evicted from the house on Day 43 with 8% of the votes where she gave the nominations super power to Drew.
Jade[edit]
Jade Albany Pietrantonio aged 23, is an Actress and a model who speaks fluent Italian on account of her father's Italian heritage, entered the Safe House on Day 1 with Drew. As part of the big twist, these two had to pretend to be a married couple to keep their place in the house. As they failed this secret task, both Jade and Drew were automatically nominated for eviction that week and survived the eviction with 22% of the vote. Jade was nominated in Week 5 where she survived eviction with 19.7% of the vote. Jade was again nominated in Week 9 however she survived again with 17.6% of the public vote while her allies Katie & Lucy were evicted. On day 81 Jade was up for eviction along with Boog and Madaline. She was saved from eviction with 52% of the vote. The next day Jade was nominated for eviction along with Ed, Tim and Drew. Jade was saved from eviction while Ed was evicted which deeply upset her. On Day 99, Jade survived the Double Eviction and earned herself a place in the 2013 Big Brother Grand Finale. On Day 101 Jade was crowned the runner-up of Big Brother after receiving 34% of the votes to win. She was given $10,000 from one of Big brother's sponsors Ambi Pur and a new HD TV.
Jade was previously a contestant on the third cycle of Italia's Next Top Model.[6] She decided to leave the show during the third episode, homesick and uncertain that modelling was what she wanted to do in life. Her father is Italian and her mother (who also used to be a model) is Australian with Aboriginal background.[6]
Justynn[edit]
Justynn Harcourt, aged 32 is an intruder entered the Big Brother House on Day 59. He was then the ninth housemate to be evicted on Day 64 after only receiving 27% in a vote to stay against Nathan. Justynn was the only 2013 housemate not to appear at the finale.[7] He was later revealed he was recruited to be on Big Brother and didn't audition[7]. He was also revealed to be the stunt double for Hugh Jackman and broke his finger doing a stunt during the filming of The Wolverine. Tahan asked him how he broke his finger but upon his response no one seemed to take him seriously except for Tim.
Jasmin[edit]
Jasmin Bell, nickname 'Jazz Bell', aged 24, unemployed, aspiring plus size catalogue model, entered the Safe House on Day 0 and was the eleventh housemate to enter on Launch night. She was nominated for eviction on Day 2 after receiving most nomination points from her fellow housemates, because of this, she then had to move into the Halfway House. Her attitude and personality was not well received by other housemates and viewers. On Day 15, Jasmin was saved from eviction despite only receiving 3% of the vote to save. Jasmin returned to the Safe House after surviving nominations on Day 16. On Day 29 she was the second housemate to be evicted after scoring just 2% of the vote to save.
Katie and Lucy[edit]
Katie and Lucy Mercer, aged 21 and 22, entered the Safe House on Day 8. They were not allowed to be more than three metres apart from each other as they were playing as one housemate.[8] In week 4 the sisters were nominated however they survived the eviction with 22% of the Australian vote. They were nominated in week 7 in a fake double eviction. They narrowly avoided eviction with 12.6% while Matt was evicted and Ben was fake evicted. The next week they were nominated along with Tully and Tahan. They received 49% of the vote thus being saved from eviction while Tully left the house. On day 66 They were the Tenth housemate to be the evicted with 12.3% of the Australian vote. Katie & Lucy were known to have personality clashes with fellow housemate Tahan.[8] They are known as the 'sugar sisters'.
Madaline[edit]
Madaline Cogar, aged 24, entered the Big Brother House on Day 64 as the second female intruder. Madaline was also saved from eviction on Day 70 by Nathan who volunteered to take her spot. On day 81 Madaline was nominated for eviction along with Jade and Boog. She was evicted on Day 87 with just 11% of the Australian vote to save her.

Matthew[edit]
Matthew Filippi, aged 29, entered the Halfway House on Day 0 and was the ninth housemate to enter on Launch night. On Day 5, Matthew won the first Showdown and therefore won $5,000, the first nomination superpower and a night in the Presidential Suite with a housemate of his choice. He chose Caleb. Although he wasn't nominated by his fellow housemates on Day 16, he was swapped in a twist on Day 17. He survived this eviction on Day 22 after receiving 27% of the vote to save. Matt was up for eviction again the following week and was saved from the eviction with 13% of the vote. On day 50 Matthew was the seventh housemate to be evicted and therefore left the big brother house. He received 11.7% of the Australian vote.
Mikkayla[edit]
Mikkayla Mossop, aged 24, entered the Halfway House on Day 0 and was the first housemate to enter on Launch Night. She was nominated for eviction on Day 9 after receiving the most nomination points (17) from her fellow housemates. As a result, Mikkayla remained in the Halfway House. As Heidi and Tim both received 10 nomination points, Mikkayla had to choose who she'd like to join her facing eviction. She chose Tim. On Day 11, Tahan had the power to save a nominated housemate. She chose to save Mikkayla, who was switched with Heidi. Mikkayla was nominated for eviction again on Day 16 and returned to the Halfway House, this time only receiving 7 nomination points.
On Day 17, in a game of 'pass the parcel', Mikkayla finished with the 'prize', which was the power to switch a nominated housemate with a safe housemate. She switched herself with Matthew, meaning the nomination twist had saved her from facing eviction two weeks in-a-row.
In Week Four's nominations, Mikkayla once again had the highest number of nomination votes with 13. This time, she wasn't saved and was finally forced to face the public vote. During Monday's Eviction Show on Day 29, it was revealed that 7/13 remaining housemates believed Mikkayla would be evicted. Sonia told Ben, Tahan, Matt and the Sisters that they were all safe, leaving just Jasmin and Mikkayla. The house was shocked when Jasmin was the one who was evicted. When revealing the tally board, Mikkayla received 15% of the public vote to stay, which was the third highest of the six nominees.
On Day 30's Nominations, Mikkayla received just 3 votes (all 3 came from Ed). However, due to the spread of the votes, it was enough to make her equal sixth. Tully received the most votes and chose Mikkayla to be nominated (sparing Katie+Lucy, Matt, Ed and Heidi in the process). However, on Day 32, Tim won Thursday's Showdown and was given the power to save a nominee and sacrifice a safe housemate. Tim sacrificed himself and saved Mikkayla. This was the third time Mikkayla had been saved by the Nomination Twist and the fourth time she had survived Eviction despite originally being nominated.
In Week Six's Nominations, Mikkayla received 4 votes (2 from Matt, 2 from Tully), however 4 was all that was needed to ensure she was nominated yet again. However, Mikkayla won Week Six's showdown and won the power to save a nominated housemate and sacrifice a safe housemate. Mikkayla chose to save herself and put Ben up for eviction. This was the fourth time Mikkayla had been saved by the Nomination Twist and the fifth time she had survived Eviction despite originally being nominated.
The following week, Mikkayla again faced eviction after receiving 7 points. The housemates believed it to be a double eviction, where in actual fact the housemate with the highest votes would go into a safe house. Mikkayla received 16.1% of the public vote, enough to save her and make her fourth highest of the six nominees, with Matt leaving in a shock eviction.
In Week 8, Mikkayla received only 2 votes (coming from Tully) which meant for the first time since entering the house, Mikkayla was safe after nominations. Big Brother announced the Showdown winner could only save a nominee, not sacrifice a safe housemate, which meant Mikkayla was safe another week. In a highlight week for Mikkayla, her rival Tully was evicted by the public.

In Week 9, there was no nominations and Big Brother announced that all Housemates would be up for eviction. The eviction took place on Wednesday of Week Ten and Mikkayla received 14.4% (equal second lowest with Ed) of the public vote, which was enough to save her. However, Mikkayla watched on as her closest allies Katie and Lucy were evicted. Mikkayla had a rough time with intruder Justynn during the 'everybody-nominated' period. The two fought over the shopping list and power in the house. When the Housemates thought they were voting in the intruder eviction, Mikkayla voted to save Nathan and evict Justynn. Although it was up to the public, Mikkayla got her wish, with only 27% of the public saving Justynn.
In Week Ten's nominations, Mikkayla only received two points, meaning she was safe from eviction for another week. On day 74 Mikayla was nominated for evicton with Tahan and Boog despite winning the nominations superpower. Mikkayla was evicted on day 80 after receiving 25.0% of votes to save, she handed over Mr. Clooney to fellow house mate Ed.

He was unaware which of the two intruders would take his spot until the public vote was calculated two days later and deemed to be Madaline.[9]

Just when Big Brother had started, it was revealed that there was a video online of Tim streaking naked on a plane with famous pop star Rihanna.[10] He was nominated on Day 9 after receiving 10 nomination points, and as a result, Tim had to move into the Halfway House. On Day 32, Tim won Thursday's Showdown and was given the power to save a nominee and sacrifice a safe housemate. Tim saved Mikkayla and sacrificed himself. In that eviction Tim received a stunning 40.2% of the vote while Caleb was evicted. Tim was nominated again in week 6 where he survived the eviction with 24% of the vote as only 23 votes separated him from Ben (who also received 24%). Tim was nominated in Week 9 where he was the highest saved nominee receiving 24.2% of the vote. In week 10 Tim was up for eviction with Tahan, Ben, Ed and Drew. He survived the eviction with 17.8% of the Australian vote while Ben was shockingly evicted. On day 88 Tim was up for eviction along with Jade, Drew and Ed. On day 94 Tim escaped eviction while his rival Ed was evicted. On Day 99, Tim survived the Double Eviction and earned himself a place in the 2013 Big Brother Finale. On Day 101 Tim was crowned the winner of Big Brother after receiving 36% of the votes to win. He won $250,000. He was called throughout the series, as a person who was manipulative and always played the game very seriously and strategically. He was considered the villain of this season.
On March 3, 2016, Dormer was one of two 'international wildcards' who won a public vote (the Canadian public voted him in) to enter the fourth season of Big Brother Canada.[11] He entered the house on Day 7 along with Nikki Grahame from the seventh and Ultimate Big Brother series of Big Brother UK. Dormer was evicted on Day 77, and was the final evictee of the series, placing third. Due to his eviction, he was the 9th (and final) member of the jury (the group of evicted contestants who vote for the winner between the final 2). He voted for brothers (who competed as one player) Nick & Phil to win, along with 6 other jurors. He returned for the Big Brother Canada 5 finale, where he conducted the Jury Discussion.
